Acidity and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) are common digestive disorders that affect the stomach and esophagus. Acidity, often referred to as acid indigestion or heartburn, occurs when excess stomach acid irritates the lining of the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat. GERD is a chronic condition in which stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, leading to persistent heartburn and other symptoms.
The main causes of acidity and GERD include overeating, consumption of spicy or fatty foods, caffeine, alcohol, smoking, obesity, and a weak lower esophageal sphincter (the muscle that prevents acid from moving upward). Certain medical conditions and medications may also contribute to acid reflux and GERD.
Common symptoms include a burning sensation in the chest (heartburn), regurgitation of food or sour liquid, difficulty swallowing, persistent cough, sore throat, and sometimes nausea. Left untreated, GERD can lead to complications such as esophagitis, ulcers, or narrowing of the esophagus.
Management of acidity and GERD focuses on lifestyle changes, dietary modifications, and, in some cases, medications. Avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, maintaining a healthy weight, elevating the head while sleeping, and reducing stress can help control symptoms. Medications such as antacids, proton pump inhibitors, or H2 blockers may also be prescribed to reduce stomach acid and protect the esophagus.
Although GERD and acidity are usually manageable, early intervention and consistent care are important to prevent complications. With proper lifestyle adjustments and medical guidance, most individuals can lead a comfortable life with minimal digestive discomfort.
